Students Support NDP Majority

If students had a say, it would be an NDP majority in the provincial election.

More than 250,000 elementary and secondary students cast ballots as part of the Student Vote Ontario program aimed at educating young people about the election process and political parties.

The students favoured the NDP in 75 ridings, including in the riding of Kiiwetinoong.

A majority of students in Andrea Horwath’s riding threw their support behind the NDP leader.

Under the student vote, the Liberals would form the official opposition, earning 28 seats, with Steven Del Duca winning his riding.

The PCs were favoured in just 17 ridings by students, with leader Doug Ford winning his riding.

Students also voted for four Green candidates, including leader Mike Schreiner.

In northwestern Ontario, students voted PC incumbent Greg Rickford in Kenora-Rainy River, NDP incumbent Sol Mamakwa in Kiiwetinoong, PC candidate Peng You in Thunder Bay-Superior North and NDP incumbent Judith Monteith-Farrell.

Student Vote included lessons in class about government and democracy.

Students had to research the parties and platforms, with some classrooms receiving visits from candidates.

The votes by students are not included in the general election tally.
