Police Constable Greg Stephenson is confirming he has resigned as the president of the Thunder Bay Police Association.
He says he decided to quit now since he only has about a year or so to go before he retires and believes it’s “time for someone else to take the reigns.”
Stephenson tells us the recent systemic racism concerns hanging over the city police as the result of two scathing provincial watchdog reports, had nothing to do with his decision to step down.
He recently spoke out against the report from the Office of the Independent Police Review Director that says local police are racist noting it doesn’t highlight the hard work put in daily by Thunder Bay police officers, nor the high amount of cases the force solves.
He notes that made it tougher since members are “facing strife and stress” from being constantly under the microscope and “having every decision we (police) make…second-guessed.”

The former police association president became a member of the union in 2005 and became president in 2010.
