An hours-long standoff continues in Thunder Bay’s north end following a hostage-taking incident.
Thunder Bay police were dispatched to a weapons incident in the 100-block of Cumberland Street North shortly after 8:30 a.m. Friday.
In a news release Friday afternoon, police said officers contained the area, and a standoff followed.
“An individual had been held hostage with the suspect but has been able to exit the location,” said the release.
Police have contained an area around the Villa Square Building across from the McDonald’s restaurant and the OPTIONS Northwest Personal Support Services.
“For the safety of officers and the public, people are asked to avoid the area until the situation is resolved,” said police.

Police are urging people to avoid the area of Cumberland Street North between Camelot Street and Marina Park Drive.
Closures are also in place on other streets in the area, including Tupper Street and Villa Street.
Several police vehicles are on the scene, including the city police force’s emergency response team. Members of the Ontario Provincial Police are also involved.
City police said more information will be provided as it becomes available.
More to come.
