Springpole gold mine receives First Nation support

First Mining Gold’s Springpole project near Pickle Lake has received some good news.

Both the Cat Lake and Lac Seul First Nations say they have completed their own assessment of the project.

And they will not object to the federal and provincial Environment Assessment process.

In the meantime, Cat Lake says has reached an agreement with First Mining Gold to help fund on an all-weather road.

The route would connect Cat Lake to Sioux Lookout and First Mining Gold would provide up to $4 million for road project.

Cat Lake says they will utilize a mix of existing forestry roads and new construction to minimize costs.

Chief Russell Wesley says this is a positive step for the community.

“My mandate as Chief was to establish an all-season road that ends decades of isolation, improves safety and healthcare, and lowers living costs. This infrastructure is a major socio-economic win for both Cat Lake and the entire region,” said Wesley is a news release.

“First Mining Gold management has shown true partnership by putting real money on the table to start engineering, and the federal IAAC continues to cooperate constructively.”

Dan Wilton is CEO of First Mining Gold and says build an all-season road will help them access the mine site.

“Reaching this agreement with Cat Lake First Nation is a definitive step forward for the development of the Springpole Gold Project. Year-round infrastructure is vital to the project’s long-term viability and ensures that economic benefits are shared within the local community.”

The Cat Lake First Nation is about 180 kilometers north of Sioux Lookout.
