A Mississauga man, who had court-ordered conditions not to be in Thunder Bay, was arrested on Thursday.

This was in relation to new drug trafficking charges, after police were dispatched to an apartment on Lake Street regarding unwanted people in the unit.

Police discovered that the apartment was supposed to be empty, and upon entering found a man attempting to destroy potential evidence. He tried to flee from police but was arrested on Lake Street shortly after.

A further search of the home led to officers finding suspected cocaine, crack cocaine, and cash.

The accused was taken to police headquarters.

Joshua Atewe, 24, of Mississauga, is charged with:• Possession of Cocaine for the Purpose of Trafficking• Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000• Being Unlawfully in a Dwelling• Obstruct Peace Officer• Failure to Comply with Release Order

The accused was charged by Thunder Bay Police Service in Dec. 2020 with assault and assault with a weapon, leading to the court ordered conditions he not be in Thunder Bay unless attending court.

The man appeared in bail court Friday, and remains in custody awaiting a future court date.

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
