Snowfall Warning Ended-Highway Re-Opened

Overview:

Environment Canada has ended the snowfall warning for the city after about 15 cm of snow fell today. It was about 10 cm less than was forecast to fall between Friday night and Saturday.

Through the day city crews were out plowing the major streets and as many sidewalks as they could get to.

Residents could be see all over with their shovels or snowblowers digging out of this latest dump which came from a Colorado Low and covered a wide area from the Manitoba boundary to Thunder Bay and east to Wawa and beyond.

The effects of the system are still being felt in other parts of southern and southeastern Ontario. Ottawa is forecast to receive 20 cm Saturday night into Sunday.

Road Conditions: Update 5:10 am January 19

Highway 17 has been re-opened between Wawa and Batchawana Bay. It was closed last night due to winter weather.

Most of the other highways in the region are snow-covered. City plows have been at work on major streets and there are plows on area highways.

Hydro & Cancellations: Updated 5:10 am January 19

Synergy North has cleared up a small outage on Arthur Street West, affecting between one and 25 customers between Vanguard Avenue and Parkdale Boulevard.

Hydro One is reporting no outages.

The Thunder Bay Airport reports that an Air Canada flight from Toronto scheduled to arrive this afternoon at 4:20 has been cancelled. A Porter flight from Billy Bishop Airport scheduled for 12:56 is delayed until 2:44. A WestJet flight coming in from Toronto at 6:31 has been cancelled.

For departures, a Wasaya flight to Sioux Lookout scheduled for 9:00 has been cancelled, and so has a 9:15 North Star Air flight. That was supposed to service Fort Hope, Lansdowne House, Webequie, and Thunder Bay. This afternoon, a 5 o’clock Air Canada flight to Toronto has been cancelled. Another cancellation is a WestJet flight to Toronto that was supposed to leave at 7:05 PM.
