Slovak Legion receiving over $323,000 for roof repairs

Thunder Bay’s Slovak Legion (Royal Canadian Legion Branch 129) is receiving a boost from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC).

The Legion has been dealing with a leaky roof, and they are receiving $323,900 to help replace it.

“Well, anybody who’s come in for the venues through bookings and all that kind of stuff coming through our front office and all that, they’ve noticed that we’ve had buckets basically in the entire building in different locations,” explained Legion President Larry Decopi. “It’s kind of sad in our bar, we had water flowing in at times… so you know, there have been certain times where it has affected our business.”

“Even just out to the community, people are afraid to come in here because, you know, it’s a safety factor and everything else, so that’s led to the main concerns of replacing this roof.”

The project will ensure the multi-use facility remains safe, operational and welcoming for residents.

The work got underway in June and is expected to wrap up by the end of November.

“It means a lot because now you know, I mean, it opens the doors up to other venues that could come forth, and we could host them and give them the service that we’re known for, and the biggest thing is we do provide a lot of services at no charge,” added Decopi.

Decopi also highlighted that the Slovak offers multiple events for seniors and veterans, like a darts club, pool league, cornhole league, and more.
