Two people suspected as responsible for a shooting death in Ginoogaming First Nation on Wednesday are in custody.
Few details were released and the OPP have not stated what charges the pair may face.
On Thursday, the Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) leadership declared a public State of Emergency following the shooting incident.
In a statement, NAN leadership described the incident as “drug related.”
Around 2:15 a.m. on Wednesday, officers with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and the Anishinabek Police Service were called to reports of a shooting in the area of Echum Drive, where one person is now reported to have been found dead.
Another person was found with what are described as “injuries.”
A shelter-in-place advisory and emergency alert were issued to notify the public as officers began searching for two armed and dangerous individuals in the area of Ginoogaming First Nation.
Several schools in the area were also closed as a precaution.
After a thorough investigation, officers have determined that the situation has stabilized in the community, and the advisory was lifted.
