Red Rock Getting Pollution Control Plant

Lake Superior is going to get cleaner thanks to a new water and wastewater treatment plant for the town of Red Rock.

Thunder Bay-Superior North MP Patty Hajdu explains the community is one of two in the province that still lets some untreated waste into local waterways, which makes the project all the more important.

“The project will ensure the community has the ability to treat its wastewater, and reduce the amount of waste being discharged into Lake Superior,” Hajdu explains, adding it’s “very critical” for the environment in our region.

Hajdu says the community of Red Rock couldn’t afford to fund the $25.7 million project, so the provincial and federal governments are funding the entire cost between them.

Ontario is funding $17.14 million of the cost while the federal government is contributing up to $8.57 million.

She says the town is taking steps to secure a start date for the project and hopes that work on the plant can start soon. (File Photo)
