Quiz Night, Cold Beers, and a Cause Worth Showing Up For

We all love a reason to go to a quiz night, right? A chance to test your knowledge, prove you do know at least one obscure fact, and maybe—just maybe—win a prize or two. But what if that same night out also supported something bigger?

This past week, I headed to Dawson Trail Brewery for a quiz night in support of Threads of Life—an organization that supports families affected by workplace tragedies, including fatalities, life-altering injuries, and occupational diseases. Not exactly light dinner conversation, I know… but stay with me.

Because here’s the thing: these incidents happen every single day. Daily. And while it’s easy to assume it’ll never happen to us or someone we love, that’s exactly why awareness matters. Knowing your rights, understanding health and safety, brushing up on WHMIS—it all counts. And if you can learn something important while holding a cold drink? Even better.

The night itself? Chef’s kiss.

We grabbed some incredible food from Station 22 (the Bourdain Stack and hot honey pepperoni are still living rent-free in my mind), paired it with a tasty beer from Dawson Trail, and settled in for some friendly competition. The questions kept us on our toes, and while we didn’t exactly sweep the leaderboard, we learned a lot—and laughed even more.

Mika, who hosted the evening, brought an energy that struck the perfect balance between engaging and impactful. She shared real stories from families affected by workplace tragedies—stories that hit home and reminded us why nights like this matter. It wasn’t heavy in a way that weighed the night down, but meaningful enough to stick with you long after the final question.

And yes—every question tied back to health and safety. And yes—it was still fun.

That’s what Threads of Life does so well. They take something incredibly serious and create space for conversation, education, and community—without losing the human side of it all.

The best part? This wasn’t some huge, complicated production. We found the event on social media, invited a few friends, and made a night of it. Simple. Easy. Memorable. Education, snacks, drinks, good people, and a solid excuse to be in bed by 9:30? Honestly, ideal.

As we (hopefully) start to thaw out from winter and lean into longer, sunnier days, consider this your sign to check out what local organizations are up to. There are so many great events happening that let you have fun and support a good cause.

And if you’re looking for your next one—Threads of Life has you covered.

Their upcoming Steps for Life walk is happening on Sunday, May 3rd. It’s a chance to get outside, bring the dog, rally some friends, and support families who need it most.

So why not take a few steps for something that matters?

I’ll be there—just need to figure out my team name first.

  • How I’m Manifesting Fun (and Magic) Into My Everyday Life - I turned 29 this year, and somewhere between the birthday cake and a late-night chat with a friend, it hit me: I don’t want life to just happen to me — I want to co-create it. Not just the big stuff, like career or relationships. I’m talking about the fun. The sparkle. The moments that make people look at you and say, “You’re glowing.”  So, I made a quiet little pact with myself: I’m going to manifest more fun. Not the wild, expensive kind (although never say no to a plane ticket) — but the kind that makes life feel rich, full, and intentionally joyful. The kind that makes you text your friends, “Can we please do that again?”
