Provincial funding helps upgrade long-term care homes

Long-term care facilities in Thunder Bay receive funding to upgrade training and equipment.

The province handed out over $2 million to five long-term care homes, which comes from the Local Priorities Fund, launched by the province in 2022.

St. Joseph’s Care Group received $862,000 of that funding, and Southbridge Pinewood, Lakehead, and Roseview received between $200,000 and $500,000.

Vice President of Clinical and Community Health at St. Joseph’s Care Group, Andrea Docherty, says that they were thrilled by the news.

“We were so excited to find out we were eligible for the fund,” said Docherty. “It’s an opportunity for us to bring forward the priorities of each of our homes.”

Funding for the care group has helped Hogarth Riverview Manor and Bethammi Nursing Home. The Local Priorities Fund is flexible, as they were able to work with residents and staff to determine upgrade priorities.

“We’ve purchased a number of specialized beds and mattresses, ones that will help prevent falls and pressure wounds, and we were also able to enhance our dinner service features, like plate warmers and cold and hot food carts.”

Docherty says this money will help make the residents feel comfortable and allow staff to provide better care.
