Proof Of Vaccination Expanded For Organized Sports

The Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU) is changing requirements for proof of vaccination for organized sports.

Beginning Jan. 31, 2022, anyone 12 or older in the TBDHU catchment area who plays in organized sports will have to provide proof of vaccination to participate.

This is not necessary for anyone that has a medical exemption.

This expands upon the previous regulations, in which coaches, volunteers and officials were subject to these requirements.

“By revising this letter of instruction, TBDHU is taking additional steps to ensure the protection for all involved in indoor sport, which in turn protects our schools and other community settings,” said Dr. Janet DeMille, Medical Officer of Health. “With increasing cases in our area, there is an increased risk of exposure and spread in sporting activities, which can lead to disruption in those activities. Further, this can have significant impact on families, schools and other settings.”

A statement from the health unit mentions close contact, heavy breathing, and crowded indoor spaces, all present in organized sports, increase the spread of COVID-19.
