Premier Says Cap-And-Trade Won’t Impact Hydro Rates

Ontario’s Premier is defending the new cap-and-trade system. The plan to fight climate change is expected to add $5 a month to home heating bills and about 4.3-cents to the price of a litre of gasoline.

Kathleen Wynne says this is something that they have to do. Wynne says climate change has a direct impact on northwestern Ontario in terms of threatening winter roads, insurance costs and food prices. She stresses the cost of not doing anything is way higher than the cost of taking action.

Wynne believes the cap and trade system will help reduce extreme and unpredictable weather. She says they are working to make sure the financial impact of taking action is moderate and they are putting support systems in place.

Wynne says money saved will go back into the pockets of Ontarians. She adds the system won’t impact the cost of hydro. (File photo)
