There could be a buyer for Ontario Power Generation’s Thunder Bay station.
OPG spokesperson Neal Kelly tells us they have selected a purchaser whom he would not name.
“So we will now start negotiations with them and we will work our way through that process and hopefully we’ll be able to announce something by the end of the year,” says Kelly.
The OPG official would not say who the proposed buyer may be saying “It’s best we do these negotiations in good faith and once we come to a conclusion we will make an announcement.”
The OPG generating station on Mission Island began operations as a coal fired plant in 1963. It was converted to running on advanced biomass after the provincial government ordered it to stop burning coal in 2014.
The plant was officially shut down in 2018 and ever since OPG has been trying to find a buyer at the request of The City of Thunder Bay.
