The closure of the grain port in Churchill, Manitoba isn’t likely to have much of an impact on the Port of Thunder Bay. The sudden announcement Tuesday surprised many.
Port Authority CEO Tim Heney says Churchill was moving about half a million tonnes of grain a year . Heney says to put that into perspective, 500,000 tonnes is about 10 days worth of shipping for our port.
He says we’re likely to see some of that tonnage come through here, but not signficiant enough to make a difference since our port moves about eight and nine million tonnes.
