Police Believe Abduction Report To Be Fake

A 29-year-old man from Pikangikum is charged after police claim a reported attempted abduction appeared to be fake.

Detective Sgt. Tracy Lewis tells us when people lie to police it takes up resources but it also hurts the community’s reputation.

“An abduction is a serious offence and that is a public safety concern so when that is stated that it has happened it puts members of the public in fear. We just don’t need that added to what’s already happening.”

The man who allegedly cried wolf is now facing a public mischief charge.

On July 18th police were told a man was walking in the area of Arthur Street and James Street in the early morning when he was approached by a vehicle and pulled inside.

The victim then said he was able to free himself and escape to find help.

After a thorough investigation, police say it was discovered that the 29-year-old male had made a false statement to them.

Officers tell us considerable time was spent investigating the initial claim of an abduction.

Police remind you that it is a criminal offence to make a false statement to police and drains police resources.
