Person rescued after falling through ice in Thunder Bay

Emergency crews responded to an ice rescue in Thunder Bay after reports of a person falling through the ice at a local park.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue says bystanders heard calls for help and saw the individual in the water before calling 911.

When crews arrived, they confirmed the person had walked onto the ice, which gave way beneath them, sending them into the frigid water.

Firefighters deployed two pumpers and a command unit to the scene. Two rescuers wearing specialized ice rescue suits entered the unstable water and reached the individual, while additional crew members helped bring the person safely back to shore.

Paramedics provided treatment at the scene before transporting the individual to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

Fire officials are thanking members of the public for quickly calling 911, saying that early response played a key role in the rescue.

They’re also reminding people that ice conditions this time of year are highly unstable due to warmer temperatures, and are urging residents to stay off all ice surfaces during seasonal changes.
