Parts Delay Holds Building Ventilators

It’s just a matter of time for when Thunder Bay’s Bombardier plant starts building ventilators in the fight against COVID-19.

Union head Dominic Pasqualino tells us the assembly lines are ready to go, the workers are just waiting for some parts to arrive. As of this writing, he couldn’t say what the hold up is.

Sandra Buckler is a communications director with Bombardier, and tells us while she can’t say what the wait is for, she understands suppliers are under pressure, as is everyone during COVID-19.

The local Bombardier plant has brought 30-40 workers back to partially build the ventilators, with a company in southern Ontario called O-2 Industries ready to put the finishing touches on them.

As for streetcars, Pasqualino says the plant is making roofs for Metrolynx cars for southern Ontario. Once those are made, the product then goes to the Kingston plant for more production, and then they’re shipped back to Thunder Bay where more features are added.

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
