Parade of Lights raises new record $50,380 for charity

A new record for funds raised during Parade of Lights.

The event brought in a total of $50,380.80 for the four charities they support.

Donations will be split evenly between the George Jeffrey Children’s Foundation, Thunder Bay Therapeutic Riding Association, Autism Ontario, and Special Olympics Ontario Thunder Bay.

Funds raised were not the only record set during their 25th year of operation.

“People are very excited for the parade every year and we had over 150 entries this year, which is I think the most we’ve ever had,” explained Parade Chair, Greg Stevenson. “We ran outta room at Manitoulin Transport, and we packed them in so it was very encouraging when you have to park vehicles on the side just to be able to join in the parade.”

Stevenson was grateful for the support from the community.

“I think Thunder Bay’s in a unique situation where we’re kind of isolated and I think the people in Thunder Bay and in the surrounding area when something like this comes up, they come together,” said Stevenson. “Thunder Bay is a very giving community, we’re a very close-knit, tight community and it shows and we’re very appreciative of all the people that showed up at the parade and opened their wallets and helping us get to this total.”

Heading into next year the goal is to outdo this year’s totals.

“One dollar more than we got last year, but honestly it’s just being able to to support the four charities and provide a worthwhile show for the people that come out.”
