Ontario Changes Social Assistance Rules

In an effort to help what the Ford government believes is the cycle of dependency, changes are coming to Ontario Works.

Social Services Minister Lisa MacLeod says that will include allowing recipients to keep an extra $100 dollars a month from extra earnings.

Currently they can only claim $200 before monthly payments are clawed back.

It’s designed to encourage those clients to find work.

Bill Bradica, the CEO of the Thunder Bay District Social Services Assistance Board, believes it’s too early to say if it will actually help.

He says they will have to wait to “see what the impact might be.”

The board CEO is encouraged recipients will have better access to employment, mental health and addiction services.
