Mary Elizabeth Wiley

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Mary Elizabeth Wiley, age 69, who passed away unexpectedly at home on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Mary was born on April 4, 1956, in Fort William, Ontario, to Mary and Frank Duchnicki. She grew up on Maplewood Street, surrounded by a big Italian family full of cousins, neighbours, and close family friends, always out playing, which became a very important part of her early life. They were filled with laughter, shared meals, and cherished memories, especially time spent at Hawkeye Lake with her cousins and aunts and uncles. Mary attended St. Edward Elementary School and later Churchill High School. She began working at just 15 years old in the cafeteria at the Great Lakes paper mill, a reflection of her strong work ethic. She went on to spend 40 years at the Fort William Clinic, where she formed lifelong friendships and became known for her warmth, kindness, and wonderful sense of humour. Mary had a special way of making people feel at ease and bringing a smile to those around her. Music was always close to Mary’s heart. She played the violin for many years with the Thunder Bay Junior Symphony Orchestra, something she truly enjoyed and took pride in. At 17, Mary met Frank, the love of her life. They married three years later and shared 50 beautiful years together. Mary gave birth to Meagan Kathleen, her first daughter at 26, and her second daughter, Laura-Beth, at 31. Raising two girls, she never missed any of their performances, sports, or celebrations; they were the center of her world. Mary and Frank built their life first on East Mary Street before creating their forever home on Perozak Street in 1984. For over four decades, they were blessed with wonderful neighbours who became like family, sharing in everyday moments, parties, celebrations, and lifelong friendships. Her house was also the hub of her children’s childhood and teenage years, where all her daughter’s friends gathered, and she always made it feel like it was their home too.

Mary found joy in the simple and meaningful things in life. She loved gardening, flowers, cooking, and baking. Her passion for cooking grew from time spent in the kitchen with her Italian mother Mary, who adored her only daughter; and it became one of the many ways she showed love to others. Her home was always open, her table always full, and everyone was made to feel welcome. Feeding those she loved and sharing her new inventions brought her immense happiness. She had a truly kind and generous heart and a deep love for animals. Mary found comfort and companionship in the many dogs she and Frank shared their lives with over the years. Mary treasured time spent with her family. Whether travelling near or far, taking simple day trips to Grand Marais, going to Florida, visiting her daughter Meagan in the U.K., or enjoying annual cottage rental getaways with her children and grandchildren, those moments meant everything to her. Family gatherings at Nona’s house, especially Sunday spaghetti dinners, were filled with food cooked with love and the sound of laughter. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren, George, James, and Zara. She adored them deeply and found so much happiness in spending time with them.

Mary is survived by her husband, Franklin Wiley; her daughters, Meagan Griffin (Daniel), and Laura-Beth Wiley; and her cherished grandchildren, George, James, and Zara. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Lynda Wiley. Cousins Barbara (Joe), Loretta (Ron), Valerie, Paula, Karen, Teddy, Jane, Janet, Pat, Margaret, and their families. Cousins-in-law Kathy, Alex (Andrew), Erica (Jason), and their families. Also survived by many close friends and neighbours.

She was predeceased by her beloved parents, Mary and Frank Duchnicki; her Nona and Nonno Valeri, her aunts and uncles Elsie (John) Chochla, Rita (Eddie) Ruby, Stella (Dyke), Walter (Sally) Duchnicki, and Mike Duchnicki; and dear friend Angela Kepes.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the first responders for their care and compassion, and to the neighbours, family, and friends who have provided such love and support during this difficult time. A special thank you to her family doctor, Dr. Jeremy Mozzon, for his kindness and care over the years, and all of the specialists who supported her.

A Celebration of Life followed by food and a social will be held on Sunday, April 19, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at the Italian Cultural Centre on Algoma St. S. in the Mediterranean Room. We know she would love to have you there to reminisce and remember her fondly.

If desired, donations in Mary’s memory may be made to the Humane Society Northwest Animal Centre.

She placed us all before her own, in every seed of love she’d sown. Now God has called her soul to rest, and holds her close amongst the blessed.
