Douglas John Thompson, age 66, resident of Thunder Bay, Ontario, passed away after a short illness on January 27th, 2026. Born in Fort William, Ontario, he was licensed as both a Truck and Coach and Automotive Technician since approx 1974. Doug worked for many garages/shops like Superior Trailers, Western Star, Peterbilt, Miller Precast, Gridlink and others. He was a highly respected engine and transmission builder. Cars were his passion and he built many in his garage. He would make or build as much as he could rather than buying parts, so each build was unique in many ways. Doug loved showing his grandsons how things work and had them help out with fixing things.
Doug is survived by his wife, Cheryl; son, Kyle (Marlena); step-sons, Jamie (Carrie), and Ronald (Paul) Shaughnessy; grandsons, Damian and Declan Thomspon, and Finley Shaughnessy; sisters, Pat Maki (Bob), Irene Parks (Fred), and Janet Bodchon; brothers, Bob (Heather), and Gordon (Susan); father and mother-in-law, Keith and Anne Empey; brother-in-law, Kevin Empey; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his parents, Fred and Janet; sister, Barbara; and brother, Geoffrey.
Cremation has taken place.
A reception will be held for family and friends on Sunday, February 15, 2026 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at West Arthur Community Centre – 1914 Arthur St W, Thunder Bay.
If so desired, in lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Centre or the Humane Society would be greatly appreciated.
