North Star MVP Considers Future

There’s nothing but praise from a Thunder Bay North Star forward to those who have helped his young career grow, especially over the last two years.

Keighan Gerrie, a player studied closely by NHL talent scouts, says he couldn’t have done it without the North Stars organization, but also his team mates.

“They’re very supportive in the locker room, we always joke around about all the NHL teams that have been there, we kind of have a little laugh about it, but at the same time you have to be serious.”

The 18-year old Hammarskjold student is looking beyond the SIJHL, as talent scouts watch him play, including from the NHL.

He admits while no team has approached him yet, he does have his focus set on a school in Ohio.

“Bowling Green, the school, I committed to, they’ve been telling me a lot teams have been talking to them about me, so, I’m not really sure the exact names.”

The North Star forward, who started playing at 4-years old, was named the Most Valuable Player in the recent SIJHL playoffs, and knows what NHL player he admires.

That player is a Nova Scotia native, who helped the Colorado Avalanche advance in the current playoffs at centre.

“Kinda look up to Nathan MacKinnon, I mean, he’s obviously a great hockey player, it’s just how fast and explosive he is, I try to model my game after him.”

The SIJHL has confirmed the North Star forward is eligible for draft into the NHL now.

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
