Former Thunder Bay police chief still awaiting trial date

The case of a former chief of police in Thunder Bay was briefly back in court.

Sylvie Hauth is facing charges stemming from a widespread investigation into misconduct claims within the police force.

The goal of the Monday morning appearance was to try and set a date for the trial but that did not happen.

The crown and Hauth’s legal team have held multiple pre-trial meetings and they have scheduled another one for February 26.

The case is returning to court on March 3.

Although there is no guarantee, the hope is that a trial date will be set the next time the legal teams are in court.

Hauth was charged with obstructing a public or peace officer, breach of trust by a public officer, and two counts of obstruction of justice in April 2024.

She first joined the Thunder Bay Police Service in 1993, eventually being promoted to deputy chief and then acting police chief, before taking on the full role in 2018, before retiring on January 27, 2023.

At the time of her retirement, Hauth was served with a Notice of Hearing on three counts of alleged misconduct under the Police Services Act.
