New OPP Detachment To Open In 2020

The provincial government is spending $18 million on a new detachment for the OPP in the Rainy River district.

More details about the project were revealed during an event Friday in Fort Frances.

The 19-thousand square ft. building will be constructed near the town’s water tower on McIrvine Rd.

Northern Development Minister Greg Rickford says officers need and deserve new surroundings.

“They need to come to a place of work where they can handle and store things properly, that gives them the inspiration to come to work every day and that reminds the community the OPP have all the modern tools to keep them safe.”

The new building will include seven cells, modernized office space, interview rooms, a fitness room, secure vaults for evidence and a multi-purpose boardroom.

Chief Superintendent and Commander of the Northwest Region Dave Lucas sees it being a real morale booster.

“It’s really like hitting the refresh button. It really brings a lot of extra energy that comes along with it.”

Construction will begin next May with the new building ready for use by the fall of 2020.
