The PC government remains under criticism over winter road maintenance in our region.
A storm this week resulted in multiple road closures across northwestern Ontario.
NDP MPP Jamie West says recent legislation defeated in the Legislature would have improved clearing standards on Highway 17 and 11.
“Government members from the south said improving winter maintenance in the north would cost taxpayers a great deal of money, without substantial benefits. Why does the Premier believe the safety of northern Ontario’s drivers is not worth the money?”
West stresses families don’t want to hear about “the dollars supposedly saved by making us less safe.”
West says that while Nipissing PC MPP Vic Fedeli previously called for improvements for northern highway maintenance, but later claimed as a member of the governing party that northern highways are already cleared often enough.
