The Nishnawbe Aski Nation is calling on Lakehead University to revoke their appointment of provincial Justice George Patrick Smith as interim Dean of the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law.
They say he sentenced First Nation leaders to prison for protecting their lands.
Deputy Grand Chief Derek Fox tells us that it’s an insult for Smith to be appointed to lead an academic institution that prides itself on advancing Indigenous interests.
A spokesperson for Lakehead University says they aren’t commenting on the matter right now, “while we reach out to Indigenous leaders to discuss the situation”.
