Minor Hockey Age Categories Changing

There is local praise for the decision by Hockey Canada to rename the age categories for minor hockey.

Alex Vaillant of Hockey Northwestern Ontario applauds the move saying families felt names like bantam, midget and pee-wee were not inclusive. He explains the changes mean the names will be replaced by U-18(under 18), U-16, U-13, and U-9.

Vaillent calls it “an awesome change to the game and we are proud of it” since the new names will be much simpler and will make the hockey more inclusive

That appears to be a sentiment of various organizations across Canada which represent those offended by the term ‘midget’ including the Little People of Canada and the Dwarf Association of Canada.

The changes will be going into effect for the next hockey season.
