From this morning’s “TODAY IN THE BAY”:
According to NASA, keep your eyes in the sky – because our region will be treated to ‘meteor showers’ and ‘the northern lights’ over the next few weeks.
The Perseid Meteor Showers are building up right now, and should peak around mid-August.
PLUS – there’s been some ‘intense solar activity’, which will bring us the Aurora Borealis – aka – The Northern Lights.
FUN FACT: as spectacular as it is to see the Northern Lights, it’s actually a very ‘violent event’. How do they happen? Energized particles from the Sun slam into Earth’s upper atmosphere at speeds of up to 72 million kmh. We have to thank Earth’s magnetic field hat protects us. This is described by space enthusiasts as, “a cinematic atmospheric phenomenon”. NASA says this year and next year will be ‘peak Aurora’ viewings!
