Mayor: Residents Need Outlet For COVID-19 Concerns

There’s now a phone line you can call if you spot people not physical distancing in our community. The line was set up by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit in consultation with police and the City of Thunder Bay.

Speaking to Acadia Broadcasting’s John Ongaro, Mayor Bill Mauro says he felt it was needed because people may feel frustrated seeing people not following the rules.

“I have some concerns, I think people in the community who are adhering to the physical distancing piece and I think they are getting concerned when they see others not following those rules.”

Mauro says there are still people that need to go to work and those who are out getting groceries but for the most part people should be staying at home.

“Whether its a lot of people that aren’t getting the message or 10% or 40% of people, I don’t know and I’m not going to pretend to know what that number is. If it’s 10 percent it’s high, if it’s 40 percent it’s too high. All we can do is exercise our individual responsibility and continue to stress the message. I’m a little bit worried about community reaction when they see people not following the rules,” Mauro said.

The Mayor says the hotline helps provide an outlet for their concern so they don’t take the matter into their own hands.
