Mauro Urges Protest To Stay Peaceful

Thunder Bay’s Mayor says local protesters have the right to be heard, but is reminding Black Lives Matter demonstrators to be safe.

Organizers are holding the event at Waverley Park this afternoon to demand an end to “systemic oppression within our own government and police force.”

Bill Mauro is asking people to keep their protest peaceful, and to prevent an outbreak of COVID-19 by wearing a mask, washing their hands, and staying away from others.

He adds racism affects our city and all communities in Canada.

The Nishnawbe Aski Nation is also strongly condemning the violent responses by police against protesters that the world is witnessing.

They say “we support all those who seek to end systemic racism in policing, and those who fight for civil rights, equality, and racial justice. NAN stands in unity against racism and injustice in all of its forms.”

Organizers say they want to amplify Black voices, after last week’s killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis made headlines and sparked protests worldwide.
