Lakehead University is paving the way for indigenous education.
The University is making it mandatory that all undergraduate students have at least 18 hours of Aboriginal studies under their belt before graduation.
Spokesperson Dr. Cynthia Wesley-Esquimaux says the hope is to equip students with an understanding of First Nations knowledge, relevant to their area of study. She adds their the first university in the country to mandate that students graduate with at least half a credit of indigenous education.
Lakehead makes the move starting September 2016.
