A Thunder Bay military veteran now has a virtual date in court due to pandemic times.
Amanda Moddejonge, who was hurt in 1998 while conducting a training exercise in Meaford, is being asked to re-pay $3,433.30 following a September 22nd ruling from the Service Canada’s Employment Insurance Commission.
The commission decided that Moddejonge received money she wasn’t entitled to through EI benefits while receiving an Earnings Loss Benefit payments from Veterans Affairs.
“The legislation could go either way,” Moddejonge remarked. “The debt is forgiven or I’ll have to pay it because it’s written in such a way that they have the ultimate decision and they can make it on a whim.”
Moddejonge went onto say: “My case is not special, unique or unlike a lot of cases where people receive double payments of CERB. Ultimately [the government] should be responsible for it because of the legislation but at the same time you should be able to trust your government and do what they say to do without being penalized for it.”
Acadia Broadcasting first told you about her story in November after she decided to file an appeal against the decision.
The commission declined to write off the disputed debt back on October 1, 2020.
