Local Student Wins Valued Scholarship

A grade 12 student at Hammarskjold High School is the recipient of the very prestigious Loran Scholarship.

Adam Luoma receives $100,000 towards his university studies and he is still pinching himself. “I’ve been speechless for the past two weeks it’s just been a surreal experience.”

The grade 12 student was one of 36 students from a pool of about 5,200 applicants across Canada to
receive the award.

He hopes to get into McMaster University in Hamilton and hopes to study neuroscience with a focus on music cognition to discover out how music affects the brain.

The Loran Award is based on evidence of character, commitment to community service, and leadership potential

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
