It’s Groundhog Day… Again

It’s an event that may determine an early spring or an extended winter.

Groundhog Day will be online again in in Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia.

Oliver Paipoonge Pete along with Wiarton Willie [Ontario], Fred La Marmotte [Quebec], Balzac Billy [Alberta] and Shubenacadie Sam [Nova Scotia] will all be in the spotlight Wednesday to make their annual predictions.

If a groundhog sees it shadow on February 2nd, that means six more weeks of cold weather. If the furry forecaster doesn’t see the shadow, an early spring.

History Of Groundhog Day

The ritual may have been created at the midway point between the winter solstice and spring equinox, but that hasn’t been confirmed. In medieval Europe, farmers believed that if hedgehogs emerged from their burrows to catch insects, that was a sure sign of an early spring. When Europeans settled in eastern North America, the groundhog was substituted for the hedgehog.

In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
