In a fantastic ‘oops’ of marketing strategy, Coca-Cola has introduced Star Wars themed cans in advance of the new movie coming out. The logos are all done in the style of Galactic Basic (the common language used in the Star Wars universe) but the cans are all shaped like Thermal Detonators. For the uninitiated, these are essentially the Star Wars equivalent of a hand grenade. Well, the Transportation Security Administration in the United States has decided that these cans look a little TOO much like hand grenades for their comfort. As a result, these new, super cool looking (in my opinion) cans have been banned from all flights in the U.S. It’s a pretty safe bet that Canadian flights are going to follow suit pretty soon as well. I’ve never been one for collecting pop cans, etc. from the movies (although I did have a LOT of the glasses from Burger King over the years…my kids loved to break them so they’re all gone now!) but I may have to get a couple of these for myself. They’re pretty neat!
I do have to wonder why Coca-Cola decided to use this particular shape for it’s product. It seems a little strange but, maybe the free press they are getting from this will sell them a few million more cans. Maybe it wasn’t such an oops after all? Check out the pictures of the cans below, the cans are in the first picture and I’ve included a picture of a thermal detonator from Star Wars as well. Now, the shapes aren’t exact, but I’m thinking there must be a new one that plays a relatively pivotal role in the upcoming Star Wars movie. Which also further intrigues me!!
