Thunder Bay’s indoor turf facility is one step closer to being built.
Council approved awarding the design-build contract following the request for proposal (RFP) process for the facility at Monday night’s meeting.
The contract was awarded to Finn Way General Contractor, with a design team of Critchley Hill Architecture, Verne Reimer Architecture, and TBT Engineering, whose proposal met all requirements and scored the highest overall evaluation according to city administration.
The final cost of the facility is estimated to be $36,056,040.
Bids to build the facility were capped at $42.7 million (not including debt repayment).
The city hopes the facility will enhance and expand recreation in the city during the winter, providing a home for various sports including soccer, football, ultimate Frisbee, field lacrosse, cricket, and more.
Moving forward, city administration will go out to the market with an Expression of Interest to determine if there are operators interested in running the facility and will return to Council with a recommended operating model.
