In-Person Marathon In Kakabeka Falls

A trio of races for any marathon runners in Northwestern Ontario and beyond.

Organizers unveiled this week that the Kakabeka Falls Legion Half and 8K Marathons will be held in person on Sunday, August 21st.

In addition, the day will feature the region’s only full marathon to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Dieppe Raid.

“The regulations that the (Ministry of Health) has put out are pretty clear,” says Race Director Jim Gilbert, when discussing getting any approvals to run the event. “We reviewed the regulations under the Emergencies Act and any rules from the (Thunder Bay District Health Unit) and we were all well within those parameters.”

The 2020 race was scrapped due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2021 event was held in-person and virtually.

Starting and finishing at the Kakabeka Legion, participants will run along a closed section of the Trans-Canada Highway, through secondary as well as country roads and throughout the Poplar Point Trail in the Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park.

The Full Marathon runs along the Half Marathon Course for the first 12 miles then breaks off and heads up Oliver Road to Murillo, down Point De Meuron Road and returns to the Legion via Pole Line Road.

More details on the race can be found here.

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
