Hobbs Looks To Future, Council Says No

A proposed hike in the sewer surcharge rate from 90 per cent to 100 gets a red flag at last night’s budget deliberations.

Mayor Keith Hobbs called for a further increase, after learning that at 100 per cent of the water rate, the city could see considerably less debt by 2034 and $13 million in savings in interest payments.

The amendment was ultimately lost, following concerns from councillors like Aldo Ruberto that a 25 per cent jump in the water rate in one year is astronomical for today’s taxpayers.

The proposed 90 per cent jump in the sewer surcharge rate from 75 per cent is now pending budget ratification. (File photo)
