Update: Section of Highway 17 west of Thunder Bay reopens after nearby fire

Update: As of Thursday morning the closures in place near Highway 17 caused by a nearby fire have been lifted.

Traffic is now flowing normally.

The Thunder Bay Police Service is advising members of the public to avoid an area of Oliver Paipoonge west of the City of Thunder Bay.

Emergency services are currently responding to a large fire in that area.

Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources crews are also providing assistance, with aircraft expected to be involved in firefighting operations.

Twin City Crossroads is closed to vehicular traffic between Arthur Street West and Highway 11/17, and a section of Highway 11/17 is also closed in that area.

People are also urged to avoid an area of Arthur Street between 20th Side Road and the junction of Highway 11/17.

Traffic disruptions are likely on other roadways in the area.

Motorists are urged to follow the directions of emergency services personnel and to find alternate routes of travel.
