Thunder Bay City Council has greenlit a piece of property on Arthur Street so a new six-storey hotel can be constructed on it.
The 90-room facility is going to be built next to the Hampton Inn and will share the same road access and parking lot.
Owner Mario Figliomeni tells us this new hotel will be a Home2 Suites by Hilton. “It’s a joint project since they are both Hilton products and they’ll work in conjunction with each other,” Figlimoeni says.
Members of council asked a number of questions of administration before approving the rezoning of the property. An additional parking lot space was also approved by City Council, the property was once a fuel bar.
Figliomeni says they are thrilled to be able to get to work on this $15 Million project and construction is expected to start in May or June, with the construction work taking a year to complete.
Councillor Andrew Foulds remarked the investment in this project shows there is a need for more hotel vacancies in our city.
The Home2 Suites by Hilton is for longer-term stays according to Figliomeni.
This hotel issue was before council in the fall of 2019 but City Clerk Krista Power tells us the applicant withdrew it due to issues they were having with the purchasing of the land from the province.
When we asked Mayor Bill Mauro about the project previously he seemed to approve of it at first glance saying it was a nice investment in the community.
