Group concerned with transportation of nuclear waste

A federal Impact Assessment of the Deep Geological Repository near Ignace will not include the transportation of the spent nuclear fuel bundles.

That’s according to We the Nuclear Free North.

It says that in recent online and in-person events, the Nuclear Waste Management Organization says transportation will be omitted from the assessment project.

The group says there would be as many as 30,000 road shipments of the spent nuclear fuel over 50 years.

It suggests the plan risks exposing conveyors, first responders and the public to the radioactive waste during transportation in the event of an accidental release of radiation.
