Former University President Passes

A one time president of Lakehead University has died.

Fred Gilbert was 79 year old.

His obituary says he died on November 2nd in Midville Branch, Nova Scotia of pancreatic cancer together with lymphoma.

He was LU president from 1998 until 2010.

His achievements at the University included helping to establish the Northern Ontario School of Medicine and construction of the ATAC building.

After he retired he ran unsuccessfully for provincial parliament for the Progressive Conservatives in 2011 in the riding of Thunder Bay-Atikokan.

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
