First Ontario Death Linked To AstraZeneca Vaccine

A 40 year old man is the first case of an AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine-related death in Ontario.

While it’s early in the investigation, the province’s Associate Medical Officer of Health Dr. Barbara Yaffe indicated that the man had vaccine induced thrombocytopenia (VITT) at the time of his death, which is the rare blood clots associated with the vaccine.

The victim got his first dose at the end of April.

Ontario has 16 cases of thrombotic thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS), 13 of which meet the criteria for VITT.

The province did announce the proceeding of second dose administration only of the AstraZeneca vaccine back on May 21.
