Fire breaks out at former Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital

A fire at the former Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital was put out by Thunder Bay Fire Rescue.

Fire Rescue received reports of smoke near the building early Wednesday morning.

Crews arrived on the scene just after 3:00 a.m. to find smoke coming out of the front of the building.

Firefighters used extrication tools to access the structure by cutting away security screening over a ground-floor window and breaking the glass.

Firefighters applied water through the window to bring the fire under control and then opened a door on the side of the building to ventilate the structure and confirm that the fire had been put out.

Nobody was in the building, and no injuries were reported.

“Due to the difficulty in securing the structure, it has become difficult to prevent access to the building and thereby prevent fires,” said Platoon Chief Shane Bernardi in a release.

After the fire, the Thunder Bay Police Service looked to secure the scene and the situation is under investigation.
