Finances, Safety Measures On Police Services Board Agenda

The current Balmoral Street location and money are on the agenda for the Police Services Board.

The board returns Tuesday, September 21 but according to Chair and Westfort Councillor Kristen Oliver there has been ongoing work behind the scenes in a few areas.

“We’ve been engaging with the community and our stakeholders on a strategic plan that will be our guiding principles on how we deliver policing in Thunder Bay for the next few years,” notes Oliver. ” The board has also working with the communications team so that we can further develop and implement better communication strategies between the board and the community.”

Those initiatives are leading the board to project a substantial negative variance, to which Oliver maintains that these are one time costs.

When it comes to building on Balmoral, there will be a report presented that looks at ways to temporarily improve the site until they can get council approval for the new police headquarters.

Oliver feels this can be done in a few ways, which includes better signage and possibly reconfiguring the way the parking lot is set up.

Back on April 20 the board approved asking City Council for the build, which was pegged at roughly $55 million.

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
