A busy summer ahead for the Kam River Fighting Walleye.
The Superior International Junior Hockey League franchise based in Oliver Paipoonge is hosting a Fishing Fest in July but officials with the club are also holding out hope about their Prospects Camp August 24-26.
The camp is open to players born between 2001 and 2005 and as of Friday, they’re over 75 per cent full.
“We probably have about 30 American prospects signed up for the camp,” confirmed Fighting Walleye Head of Player Development and General Manager Kevin McCallum. “Most of them have had the vaccine and are just chomping at the big to get up to Thunder Bay and try out.”
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on May 20 that the Canada-U.S. land border will remain closed until at least June 21.
The Walleye would also need Ontario’s three step plan to be in the last stage in order to execute the camp.
In step three between 70 and 80 per cent of adults would have at least one dose and 25 per cent of adults would be fully vaccinated against coronavirus.
The province is still aiming to start the gradual approach to re-opening the week of June 14.
