Feds Sign Power Agreement

The Fort William First Nation was the backdrop for federal Indigenous Relations Minister Seamus O’Regan to formally sign an agreement with Wataynikaneyap Power.

The $1.6 billion Indigenous power project designed to bring electricity to remote First Nation communities.

The project will allow these communities to get off diesel generators, with O’Regan adding “at the end of the day we are going to hook up 14 communities to the Ontario power grid, and that’s huge.”

The project is being jointly funded by the federal and Ontario governments.

Wataynikaneyap Power CEO Margaret Kenequanash explains it is important to have the paperwork completed on the project so the financing model can be finalized.
