Feds Not Backing Off From Gas Tax

The Harper government doesn’t appear to be backing away from using gas tax money towards the Thunder Bay event centre.

City figures indicate their contribution will be 23 million dollars, 13 million lower than first anticipated.

If the feds have any plans of moving away from that position, Natural Resources Minister Greg Rickford is hiding it well.

He’s saying the gas tax fund is an option the city can still explore for the federal contribution and repeats the position the government won’t be funding any hockey arenas but will look at helping to finance the event centre component.

Federal involvement in the project took a new twist last week when MPP Michael Gravelle was caught off guard by news of the reduced federal donation. (File Photo)
