Feds Make Highway Announcement

The Harper government is getting in on the local highway funding bandwagon.

Today Natural Resources Minister, Greg Rickford, along with provincial minister Michael Gravelle, announced the feds are kicking in $56 million for two four laning projects between Thunder Bay and Nipigon.

One is the five kilometre stretch of Highway 11-17 from the Black Sturgeon River Bridge to Red Rock Road #9. The second is a 15 kilometre stretch from Highway 587 to Pearl Creek.

Rickford hopes it’s the first of other regional funding announcements for highway twinning. He points to the stalled start of improvments to the Trans Canada Highway between Kenora and the Manitoba border which has been held up because of concerns by leaders at Shoal Lake 40 First Nation.
